Weekly PPC Update – Meteor Edition

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Wow.  Our thoughts go out to the people affected by the meteor impact in Russia’s Urals region.  If you’ve seen the meteor video, you will agree that it’s kind of amazing that there was no loss of human lives.

If you’ve been glued to the news online or on TV about this or anything else, take a break!  It’s time for our weekly PPC update!

First, out of Google…..

We’re all trying to figure out exactly how Enhanced Campaigns will impact our companies or our clients, so Google is providing some Learn with Google Webinars about this very topic.  Starting this coming Thursday, Google will offer a series of five of these webinars to bring us all up to speed.  Topics include:  device bid adjustments and smarter mobile ads (2/21), upgraded site links and call extensions (2/28), location bid adjustments and enhanced location targeting strategies (3/7) and more.  See the whole list and signup info here.

Do you use Search Funnel data in optimizing for conversions?  If you’ve been reluctant, for whatever reason, now would be a good time to start.  Google’s making it easier by adding Search Funnels to the column customizer. See ideas on how to use this data, along with a success story about conversion optimizer.

AdWords Express is now available through your MCC.

We’re a couple days late with this, but if you haven’t gotten your sweetie a Valentine’s card yet, you could always print out one of the cards on this page and give it to them, as if they didn’t know you were a giant geek already.

Next, from Bing Ads……

The new Bing Ads reporting UI is now default.  The new UI, which has been an option for some time features:

  1. A new, Wunderbar-style navigation for faster access to reports.
  2. Report creation in half the clicks.
  3. A simpler, more convenient way to download and view reports.
  4. Automatic application of your reporting parameters (time and date ranges, for example) to the Campaign or Ad Group you’re working on.

The Bing Ads blog has been mixing it up lately with a lot of optimization tips/best practices by consumer vertical/season.  The latest in this series is What Will They Search For this Spring? Insight and Optimization Tips for the US Market, which provides an overview of the top areas of consumer spend in the springtime.

Finally, from the rest of the Internet……

There are a few good posts at Search Engine Land about Product Listing Ads (PLAs).  The first gives some ideas about making the linkage between query, trigger product, and product sold, so you can evaluate performance in Google Analytics.  The second is 6 Advanced Strategies For Optimizing PLA Campaigns.

Search Engine Watch has an interesting article called Conflicting PPC Trends:  What They Mean & How to Fix Them. The author looks at several scenarios including what happens when you get more impressions, but fewer clicks, when your CTR increases but your conversion rate decreases, transactions increase, but ROI decreases, and more.  Check it out.

That’s it for this week friends.  Stay safe this weekend and have fun!

Weekly PPC Roundup – Bowl Sunday Edition!

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

And, we don’t mean the Super Bowl.  At 3 o’clock, the Puppy Bowl is on.  We are waiting with bated breath to see who wins!  How about you?  Actually, we’re just hoping that the puppies aren’t napping like they usually are.

Enough about sports and puppies, though.  Let’s talk about what’s really important – the wild wonderful world of PPC!

First, from Google….

Make sure you’ve downloaded any legacy Impression Share data that’s important to you.  Tomorrow, February 4th, Google is retiring this, which means that you won’t be able to see or retrieve it.  New Impression Share reports do allow for some pretty cool things, though, including:  distinct search and display columns, “hour of day” segmentation, filters, charts, and rules for IS, and device segmentation.

New Learn with Google webinars have been announced.  Here’s the lineup for the Build Awareness topics:

02/12 [Multiscreen] Brand Building in a Multiscreen World
02/20 [YouTube] How to Build your Business with YouTube Video Ads
03/05 [Social] How to Use Google+ and Make Social Work for You
03/12 [Mobile] Understanding Mobile Ads Across Marketing Objectives
03/27 [Wildfire by Google] The Call for Converged Media

Click here to see the rest, or click here to register.

AdWords for video has some cool new reporting features to make your reports “more beautiful”.  Features include:

  • reach and frequency metrics in your campaign reporting interface.
  • metrics displayed by marketing goals (brand awareness, conversions, etc.)
  • geo-mapping to see where your videos are being viewed the most

Now, fresh out of Bing Ads……

The newest product update says  “if you have different types of targets associated with a campaign and an ad group, both will be considered when targeting your ad.”  Check out the chart on this page to see how your ad targeting will be affected.

This post includes some good resources for people who are new to Bing Ads and want to learn more about SEM in general, and Bing Ads in particular.  You can also see SMB Essentials SeriesPPC for SMB Series, and SEM Beginner Series.

Bing Ads has a new whitepaper:  What Moves You? How Digital Marketers Can Drive Discovery, Engagement and Action in Developed & Emerging Markets.  There are a lot of interesting takeaways in the report, but you can also get an overview here.

And, from elsewhere in PPC land………

The Christmas Jump, Tablet Hump & CPC Bump: Recent Trends In Mobile Usage from Search Engine Land gives some really illuminating statistics about search behavior on tablets and other mobile devices based on data collected around the holidays over the past couple years.  Specifically, It pays to target to devices separately,  tablets will account for 1 in 4 paid search clicks by the end of 2013, and the tablet opportunity still exists.

Also from SEL:  The Lead Up To the Super Bowl: How Are We Searching? has Vanessa Fox breaking down how Super Bowl commercials affect online searches and behavior.  In talking about Search, Facebook, and Twitter, she says that (over the past few years) “we didn’t replace one activity with another. We mostly added these new behaviors to what we were already doing.”  What will this year bring?

Search Engine Journal predicts the winner of tonight’s game based on their social media followings.  Errrrr….not sure how scientific this is, but interesting nonetheless!

That’s it for now, folks. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Weekly PPC Roundup – Game On Edition!

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

If you are looking for the week’s most important, easy to digest updates for PPC, you’ve come to the right place!  Following are the top stories of the week, from the search engines themselves and from other industry leaders.

First, from Google…..

Another awesome invention out of the Creative Sandbox:  Google announces the Mobile Ads Showcase app, which lets your clients experience their mobile ads exactly as a customer would.  The app is now available for Android smartphones and tablets through the Google Play Store.

Google Adwords also published a useful infographic about how their ads quality team fights “bad ads”.  What is a bad ad, you ask?  Well, they market counterfeit goods, harmful malware, dangerous services and more.  In 2012, there were 224,000,000 bad ads disapproved, 889,000 bad advertisers banned, and many other interesting stats.  Check out the infographic for more details.

Now, from Bing Ads……..

A cross section of the Bing Ads team gives their New Year’s Resolutions for Bing Ads for the coming year here.

Bing put up a nice little video about why you should advertise with them.  Among the reasons:

  • There are over 150 million unique searchers of the Yahoo! Bing Network
  • Searchers are likely to spend 22% more than the average internet searcher
  • 45 million searchers do not use Google – you can only reach them through Bing Ads

That last bullet is kind of funny!

From elsewhere around the web……

Remember how (3 paragraphs up) we were discussing “bad ads”?  Search Engine Land takes it a step further and does a year over year comparison including this nugget:  “Google axed 224 million bad ads in 2012. That’s up 67% from 2011.”

Also from SEL: 4 Trends That May Surprise Online Marketers In 2013 has some good predictions for what we’ll be seeing over the next year, including integrated user feedback, Siri, and much more!

From Search Engine Watch:  Justifying Smartphone PPC Spend as Tablet Results Soar gives a bunch of reasons why you SHOULD be advertising on mobile if you aren’t already.

Also from SEW, there’s a good breakdown of why and how to do an All Products Campaign in the new Product Listing Ads interface.

Finally, Hubspot has a good article to help figure out whether your (or your client’s) website passes the blink test.  If not, the clicks you drive could be for naught!

That’s it for now friends.  Enjoy an evening of awesome TV, if that’s what floats your boat.  That’s what we’ll be doing!

Weekly PPC Roundup – the Shake Up Edition

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

After a week of wild weather on the east coast, we present to you a wrap up of what’s been shaking up the search world this week. Let’s start with bing.

Bing is at an all time high for search engine market share according to the most recent Comscore report. Google increased a tenth of one percent, bing increased two tenths of a percent, and Yahoo fell to its lowest market share of 13%.

Things aren’t all good in Bing land, though. Danny Sullivan examines the very real possibility of Yahoo backing out of the Microsoft deal in this article at Search Engine Land. According to the article, there “continues to be a gap between the expected revenue earned per search and what Yahoo hoped its deal with Microsoft would produce.” Consequently, Microsoft is having to make up the difference. What do you think will happen? (more…)
